Matriarchy is also known as a society where a group of women lead and make decisions. In such societies female has the role that men normally exercise in our society. Matriarchy may seem like a myth in our society but believe you may, there were and still are a few societies that practice matriarchy.

Every time you read about incidents of domestic abuse and how women suffer just for their basic rights, we bet you think of a society where women can make decisions for once! And there exist such societies, and we bet once you read about them you will feel motivated and proud right away.

Mosou Tribe – China

When we talk about a society where women are seen as the ideal leader and decision maker, It is the women of the Mosou tribe. It is the tribe where the grand-mother sits at the center of the table, where daughters and sons live with their mothers and so does their kids. There is a ceremony called ‘Walking Wedding‘ which is basically a hookup, so they don’t believe in marriages either. Couples never live together nor do they ever exchange vows.

Women own and inherit property from their parents as well as grow crops and rear children. Men, help with building homes and plowing. Men have no contribution to child rearing as most women don’t even know who the father is. Mosuo men are feminists and support the leadership of female in their society. They believe it is not their duty to look after their baby sisters or children.

Nubia Tribe – Sudan

Nubia tribe is located in the rural part of Sudan, these people are the local inhabitants of the region for more than 1000 years. Nubian have queens who lead the people. There have been a lot of Nubian queens in the history.

Nubian worship the queen of all  Egyptian goddesses Isis. The women of this tribe have always been warriors and protect their tribe from all kinds of enemies. Women are considered stronger among them and make the decision. No wonder they don’t have any domestic violence issues.

Khasi Tribe – North-East India

Another good example of a society with zero number of violent crimes against women is the Khasi tribe. Khasi tribe see women as the leaders and children carry on the name of their mothers. It is the daughters in the Khasi tribe who gets the inheritance. Not only this, the children live with the mother so this helps a lot in the cases of divorce. They don’t ever require family therapy.

Since children are more attached to their mothers, nobody decides against the idea of women keeping the children post divorce. Women of this tribe are allowed to marry as much as they want, no matter how many men they marry her kids from previous marriages will remain with her.

Trobrianders – Papua New Guinea

People belonging to this tribe have open values. During the early 20th century, when the men from this tribe traveled in search for a political position of power the women had autonomy. they follow a matrilineal principle which means everything comes from the mother. Which is why the women of this tribe have the guardianship of their families while men exercise them.

Palawan – Philippines

Everyone in the world could learn a lot from the people of Palawan. their belief about equality is something we all need in our society. It is a society without any hierarchy! every individual in the society whether it is a guy or a girl is equal. People of both genders have an equal right to express their views, make decisions and take steps which collectively benefits the society.

In conclusion, all of these societies have one thing in common and that is they respect their women. Women in these societies are not in an abusive marriage nor they find it hard to end a toxic marriage. These societies give women equal rights just as men. They don’t need divorce lawyers.

Their families are healthy and happy living together without any conflict. Women of these societies,  don’t need to fight custody battles for their children because the children always remain with their mothers. Also, they value equality and give equal rights to both genders especially in making tough decisions.

They portray a strong image of women which is the ultimate end of gender-based injustice in our society. Therefore, we can learn a lot from these societies if we want to empower our women and make a strong productive society where everyone benefits.
